Or you could give Mike Doolin a call. He's a really nice guy to talk to and could probably steer you in the right direction.

Likewise, Lance McCollum. He's built more than a few and has a wealth of knowledge on the subject.

Hi Ron,

Yesterday I was alone in my car, and was able to play Michael Hedges' song, Baal T’shuvah, at pretty high volume. What an incredible composition! It's a great example of a virtuoso playing a harp guitar, just in case you need any inspiration.

Here's a link to Michael Hedges Bio page, with a picture of him playing harp guitar, as well as a link to an audio clip of the song I mentioned.

Good luck with this project! Please show a lot of construction details!

Dennis, Im pretty sure Baal T’shuvah was played on a lowstrung 6 string. A Duborg (sp) if I recall correctly?

Hi Lance,

I listened to that song over and over, trying to envision the guitar that is creating those big, fat, juicy low notes. I could never wrap my brain around it. Then, I finally read the liner notes on the "Beyond Boundaries" CD, a collection of solo instrumentals that includes Baal T'shuvah from "Oracle", and the liner notes say it was performed on harp guitar. I suppose the liner notes could be wrong, or may conflict with notes on the Oracle CD (I can't find that CD at the moment to check.)

It sits easier in my mind that those low notes are coming from a harp guitar. If you know that is wrong, and that they really came from a 6-string, all I can say is I am stunned.

I noticed that there is a video available, and think I may just splurge on it. The video includes Baal T'shuvah, so I can watch and listen.

Dennis

p.s. Ron, sorry for the thread tangent, but may I recommend that you grab a copy of Hedges' Beyond Boundaries, which has several songs played on harp guitar.

Ron, here's a tidbit of background, from Lance McCollum about his meeting with Michael Hedges, regarding a harp guitar. After you read this, you'll know Lance McCollum really is the guy you want to confer with. (scroll down to about the 8th post in the thread I linked to, from Lance McCollum):

Dennis, you may be right, it would not be the first time I was wr,wr,wr,wrong
I have the Video, its awesome! And I'm pretty sure that is where I saw Michael play Baal T’shuvah on a six string. Ill have to re watch now

Anyways, is not "Because Its There" the ultimate harp guitar by Hedges, if not its possibly his most notable song.

I'm listing now! astonishing.

The ultimate harp tune, or ultimate harp tune by hedges ??? For my money, NOTHING beats Issundun by Stephen Bennett on a harp guitar. Will make you weep ...

one of my students can play Hedges Baal T'shuvah ... it sounded awesome one night in my living room on my last completed baritone - the tuning needs to be low.
